I loved this piece, which made me miss my creative roommate I lived with fresh out of college. We would gather broken furniture from the street and make sculptures in the tiny apartment...
Yes! My daughter is starting the college search now also and so I’m re-living the wild magic of those times. What an age. I hope our kids find the right places.
This conjured memories of my first apartment as well - a one-bedroom with no kitchen on West 87th yet somehow we had those joyful, raucous dinners (cooked on a hotplate) with music of course, my roommate's canvases stretched out, our mattresses on the floor. Love this line and hope today's "young people" just starting out can have their own version of being alive in the world like that. "We spent a lot of time there together, cooking from the Moosewood Cookbook, listening to our favorite CDs—The Pretenders Greatest Hits was a top choice—talking on the rotary phone, drinking wine or coffee or tea, studying, eating, and dancing."
Thanks for reading. I love that you did all of that on West 87th Street with just a hot plate. Mattresses on the floor and canvases against the wall sounds wonderful too.
Marvelous writing, wow, I got drawn into this world. It really got me thinking of early Jayne Anne Philips - a short story “Rayme” - so beautiful … and the nostalgia over that particular time in life when friends become both muses - and family ❤️

This is also reminding me that one of my college boyfriends was a garbage sculptor. He was pretty good at it.
That’s truly so sexy.
Haha. My first bisexual boyfriend, though neither of us were out at the time. He was great in many ways.
This was a great read.
Thank yo Bronwyn! Glad you liked it!
What a joy to read—brought back so many of my own flashbacks of that time. Wild, beautiful, expansive times.
Thank you Robin! It did seem wild, beautiful, and expansive didn't it?

Is she a junior too? I hope they find and get into places that make them happy!
Yes and yes!

We never attempted a quiche!
Honestly, they were not very good, but we were obsessed with getting the crust not to be soggy.
Living with women has been some of the BEST times of my life! Love this.
Am I the only one who came into the comments to see if Chanj was here? Are you still friends?! I love this 90s house life so much.
Thank you for reading and commenting Erin!
As far as I know Chandra is upstate living a very quiet, non social media life. I miss her for sure.
Love your writing. Love you ♥️🥰🙌🏽
Love you and your writing too Sejal! 🩷🩷🩷 I just found the postcards you sent me long ago. What a treasure!
